What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition of the bones that causes them to become thin, fragile and brittle. This leads to a higher risk of broken bones. Osteoporosis occurs when more calcium is taken out of the bones that is replaced.

How is Osteoporosis treated with physiotherapy?

Osteoporosis can be treated by increasing your intake of Calcium and vitamin D, as well as by a variety of medications. Exercise also plays an important role, and this is where physiotherapy comes in.

Bones become stronger when a certain amount of impact or strain is placed on them. Taking part in regular weight bearing or resistance exercises can help stimulate the production of new bone. You physiotherapist can help you develop and maintain an exercise plan that will strengthen your bones to slow down the progression of osteoporosis, or prevent it from occurring in the first place.
